Genuine Leather vs PU at a China Shoe Factory — What You Get

When you source shoes from China, the material decision is one of the most critical. At MOHE, we produce both genuine leather and PU footwear daily across our three factories. This guide gives you the real numbers and practical differences — no marketing fluff.

1. Material Basics: What You're Actually Buying

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather is natural hide — cow, sheep, or goat — tanned and finished. It breathes, develops patina, and lasts years with care. But it's not uniform: grain, thickness, and softness vary by hide and tannage. At MOHE, we source leather from tanneries in Wenzhou and Guangdong, with full-grain, top-grain, and split options.

PU (Polyurethane) Leather

PU leather is a synthetic material: a fabric base (usually polyester or cotton) coated with polyurethane. Modern PU can mimic leather grain and texture closely. It's lighter, consistent, and cheaper. But it doesn't breathe like real leather and can peel or crack over time, especially in heat or with flexing.

Key difference: Genuine leather is a natural product with inherent variation; PU is engineered for consistency.

3. Durability & Performance: What Your Customers Will Experience

Our recommendation: For fashion sneakers or boots that need to last, use genuine leather. For fast-fashion or budget lines, PU is fine — but warn your customers about care.

4. Quality Control: What We Check at MOHE

Hybrid Approach

Many of our clients mix: genuine leather for upper panels (where it shows) and PU for linings, collars, or accents. This balances cost and perception. Example: a sneaker with leather vamp and PU quarter panels saves $3–$5 per pair.

6. Working with MOHE: What You Get

We're not a trading company. We own three factories — Wenzhou (sneakers), Putian (athletic), Guangzhou (dress shoes). Every pair we ship is made in our own lines.

Contact us: production@mohe-shoes.com. We'll send you a material comparison sheet and sample kit within 48 hours.
